Determinants of Long Term Care Service types of Family Caregiver

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study is to analyse determinants of caregivers` selecting the major types of long term care service for elderly with need of long term services, and then to discuss the findings. For this research, family members who are primary caregivers that utilize long-term care services for the elderly who had qualified by Long Term Care Insurance were selected and surveyed. Among the collected data, data for 280 primary caregivers utilizing long term care services were used for this study. The results are as follows. First, family caregivers with older elderly select more nursing home for the elderly than long term care hospital. Second, family caregivers of the elderly with spouse select more in-home care than nursing home for the elderly. Third, family caregivers with higher level of education select more in-home care than nursing home for the elderly or long term care hospital. Fourth, family caregivers with higher household income select more nursing home for the elderly or long term care hospital than in-home care and more long term care hospital than nursing home for the elderly. Fifth, family caregivers of the elderly with dementia select more nursing home for the elderly than in-home care or long term care hospital. Sixth, family caregivers of the elderly with stoke select more in-home care or nursing home for the elderly than long term care hospital. Seventh, family caregivers of the elderly with more number of diseases select more in-home care than nursing home for the elderly and more long term care hospital than in-home care. Eighth, family caregivers of the elderly with metropolitan residence select more in-home care than nursing home for the elderly and more nursing home for the elderly or in-home care than long term care hospital. Ninth, family caregivers with higher level of negative mental health(depression) select more long term care hospital tan nursing home for the elderly or in-home care.
